The City of Whittlesea is one of Victoria’s fastest growing and culturally diverse municipalities. It has a current population of approximately 134,000 people, with 54.3 per cent of residents from non-English speaking backgrounds. Physically, the City is characterised by a mixture of expanding urban areas and environmentally significant rural areas.

Role of local government
Australia has three levels of government: Local, State and Federal (or Commonwealth). Councils form the first category.
As a local government, the City of Whittlesea, provides a broad range of infrastructure, economic and community services to residents. It also ensures peace and order are maintained while managing the district’s resources and facilities.
Council services can be grouped into a number of broad categories:
- General public services
- Health, welfare and community services
- Planning and building services
- Land use management services
- Environment services
- Infrastructure and asset management services
Council has the additional responsibility of implementing some of the diverse programs, policies and regulations set by State and Federal Government.

For its Senior Citizens Liaison Program which offers a range of events and activities for older people including opportunities for social interaction.
2006 ECO-Buy Awards for Excellence
For excellence in communicating the ECO-Buy program that supports local government and businesses in purchasing environmentally friendly products.
2006 Cancer Council Sun Smart Shade Awards
For prioritising shade provision at a policy and strategic level within council.
