sustainability & environment

Are you interested in influencing community behaviour in relation to environmental or sustainability issues? Would you like to protect our world for future generations? If so, you may be interested in a career in sustainability and environment.

At the City of Whittlesea, sustainability is an integral part of what we do and the way we approach our work. In addition to this, we have specific departments and units whose primary focus concerns sustainability and environment.

One of these is Sustainability Planning which is responsible for working towards a more environmentally and socially sustainable community. Another is Waste Management which coordinates waste and recycling services as well as educating the community. And finally, there is our Parks and Gardens unit which plans, develops, manages and maintains all public space and streetscapes throughout the municipality.

Why work for us?

The City of Whittlesea is facing rapid change as it attempts to keep up with its fast growing community. This means that there are challenging and exciting opportunities in trying to keep abreast of current issues and influencing the way that growth occurs. Our employees also have the ability to shape a culturally and geographically diverse community with the benefit of seeing results that make a difference.

Key projects

Key projects within Sustainability Planning include examining the impact of development on biodiversity, trying to reduce the local impact on climate change and addressing water security.

Key projects within Waste Management include the implementation of efficient recycling services combined with community education in areas of waste avoidance and the resource smart principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Key projects within Parks and Gardens include the development of synthetic surface sporting grounds, devising alternative water supplies for irrigation such as harvesting storm and ground water, and the development of an all-abilities adventure playground.
