migrants and refugees

Our Work Ready program supports newly-arrived non-student migrants and refugees in the municipality to become ready for the workforce.

The program creates meaningful work experience placements to help disadvantaged migrants and refugees overcome the employment challenges they face. These barriers to the workforce may include getting Australian work experience and speaking English.

It will provide skills, support and confidence to the individual participants, getting them ready to work, with the long-term goal to secure employment in the wider community.

Since the program was introduced, 12 people have participated: six refugees, four skilled migrants, one student and one Australian citizen. Half of them have since been employed, four by us.

In 2009, the program won us a Diversity@Work Award (small to medium organisation) for the Employment and Inclusion of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Australians.

The Work Ready program was proposed in our Multicultural Plan 2007 – 2011.
